Tis the Season to Eat Frozen
All foods are in season every day of the year when buying frozen!
If you are wondering how to get exotic and seasonal foods all year round The New Ice Age Team recommends that you read on because buying frozen foods enables you to eat seasonal foods all year round.
The difference between fresh and frozen foods is that fresh foods are only available with the seasons of the year, so if you get a craving for some big juicy raspberries in winter you may be disappointed! Unless of course you eat the ones flown in from hotter climates and we’re not here to encourage you to buy foods with big carbon foot prints!
We are here to help you buy freshly frozen foods that are nutritious, tasty, cost effective and time saving. The fact that they’re not flown in from Thailand is an added bonus (eco-scientists have recently proved that buying frozen food is better for the environment).
Winter treats
So, if it were not for the readily available frozen fruits from supermarkets you would have to wait for summer before you could enjoy that strawberry. Luckily for all of us the availability of frozen foods allows us to eat almost anything we want, no matter what month of the year it is!
So, back to those raspberries! Frozen fruits are very popular now and they allow you to eat seasonal fruits whenever you want. So, why not cure those winter blues with a raspberry smoothie from frozen on Christmas day, how about making a mango milkshake in November or even try a raspberry cheesecake from frozen in January!
Seasonal foods
Some foods are traditionally eaten at certain times of the year out of choice (like turkey at Christmas time) but mostly foods are seasonal because that’s the way nature does things!
But that doesn’t help if you have a guest over who wants Broccoli in February! Don’t try to keep them entertained until March when fresh Broccoli is in store – go to your supermarket and buy frozen.

Food miles
The third option is that you can buy exotic foods from the tropics, but they would have been air freighted and we all know that food with a size 14 carbon foot print is a bad thing!
Frozen fish
If you’re a bit of a fish fan then we presume you do not want to wait for August or September to buy your Sea Bass, Mussels and Trout. Buy frozen fish any time of year and it can last until any time the next year! Blind tastings have shown again and again that it is impossible to tell the difference. Frozen fish is often frozen out at sea within hours of catch and this ensures that the fish is fresher than fresh.
Reducing waste reduces cost
If you don’t want to waste any of your frozen food by throwing it away, you can put it back in the freezer for another day. One of the reasons why frozen food is so cost effective is because there is so little wastage. Up to 30% of fresh food can spoil on the shop shelves and so this wastage is built into the pricing. Frozen food manufacturers buy in bulk in the confidence that none of their foods will be wasted. Frozen food lasts indefinitely without the need for preservatives because the temperature alone preserves the food.
Frozen food shelf life
You too can ensure that your frozen food lasts a long time by ensuring that you always keep the frozen food in an air tight packaging and that your freezer is kept at a constant temperature.
How would it be possible to have that apple pie in April if it were not for your freezer? Unless of course you’re wearing that size 14…
Love your freezer!
So, don’t forget – your freezer only costs about £18 a year to run! Enjoy it and take advantage of it – eating frozen food can be a great way to eat exotic foods normally seen as seasonal luxuries or it can just be a great way of reducing your weekly shop.
