Describe briefly how to boil frozen broccoli florets?

Thanks Hannah - I will try to be snappy!

  • In an ample pan for the amount of broccoli and water to sit in, boil enough water to cover the broccoli.
  • When the water is bubbling add the broccoli slowly, so as not to splash yourself or overspill the water (tip some away if necessary). Putting the Broccoli into boiling water rather than boiling the water with the broccoli in it, will help to seal in nutrients in the in the same way blanching does.
  • The water should come back to the boil relatively quickly once the frozen broccoli is in it and should cook in around 5 minutes.
  • The broccoli should still be quite firm at this point, boiling it any more can make it mushy and release more vitamins into the water than is necessary and could be retained in what you eat. You may want to test a small piece of the broccoli at this stage with a fork being careful not to burn your mouth, but making sure it is heated through.

Thanks very much for your question and I hope this covers any uncertainties you had about frozen food and by the way, the method above can be used for the majority of pre-packaged frozen vegetables.
