Can I put everything from my fridge in the freezer if I'm going away on holiday? Thanks, Harvey

Harvey, the good news is most things can be frozen, but, and I know you waiting for the but, as we know things retain more nutrition if they are frozen at source.

The other issue is they have started to deteriorate the bacteria will be frozen at the point of growth that it is at when it enters the freezer and continue to grow when the food is defrosted again. Therefore, don't not be mistaken in thinking that it will curb the deterioration of your food. If the food is nearing the end of its shelf life anyway whether cooked or fresh it is more advisable to throw it away.

There are a few things that cannot be frozen namely salad. Lettuce for example is made up of a large mount of water and therefore turns slimy and mushy when it is defrosted. Most fruit is also high in water and similarly not very appetising when thawed.

The other one is eggs. Eggs cannot be frozen in their shells, because the egg will expand when it freezes and break the shell. You can however break them into Tupperware container, either separately with yolk in tact or mixed if you will be using them in one go once thawed. Click here for more info on storing frozen foods.

Items that can be frozen however will retain all their goodness. Click here to see the nutitional benefits of frozen food. Happy holidays.
