I have just been to a sandwich shop and ordered a prawn mayo one. The lady behind the counter took frozen prawns out of the freezer put them in a pan and ran cold water on them.. is this safe? I said I didn't want them. One time this happened previousl
We’re sorry to hear that you got food poisoning after your unfortunate sandwich shop experience.
If pre-packaged frozen seafood, including prawns, are defrosted and prepared correctly they should not give food poisoning. Unfortunately, it seems like the sandwich shop lady has not read our tips on how to defrost frozen food safely. If she had, she would have realised that you cannot simply put them in cold water and immediately cook them - that’s why they are still frozen at the core when put in your sandwich!
Perhaps next time you should nicely mention to the lady that her method of preparing frozen prawns is not the safest way, and point out that frozen seafood is best thawed in the refrigerator overnight.
