SCIENTISTS CLAIM FROZEN FOOD IS AS ‘FRESH’ AS FRESH
Scientists have challenged celebrity chefs’ claims that cooking with fresh ingredients is always best.
Academics at Sheffield Hallam University’s Centre for Food Innovation say their latest research shows frozen food is as effective as fresh in providing family nutrition. The nutritional analysis research report demonstrates that despite common misconceptions there is no significant nutritional difference between fresh and frozen foods.
The report used extensive information to compare 37 macronutrients (fat, protein and carbohydrate) and micronutrients (vitamins and minerals) in the most popular supermarket foods.
Charlotte Harden, nutrition and science consultant to Sheffield Hallam said: “Consumers often perceive frozen foods as nutritionally inferior to fresh, however our comparison has shown that this is inaccurate. We have concluded frozen food is just as effective as fresh in providing 37 key nutrients.”
Items compared in the nutritional analysis research by Sheffield Hallam University included the most popular family purchases of pizza, broccoli, carrots, garlic bread, whole chicken, prawns, salmon, sausages, spinach and parsnips. The study found that shoppers had the opportunity to swap from fresh to frozen on over 600 commonly purchased items.
